WATCH: Can inverted nipples be corrected?
Often patients with inverted nipples do not realise they can be corrected.
Inverted nipple surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic (awake) and even in severe cases the procedure has excellent results.
Inverted nipples are very common among both men and women. Between 10 and 20 per cent of the population have inverted nipples. Sometimes the nipples are inverted from birth and sometimes they develop as people age or following pregnancy.
In most cases, inverted nipples are natural and cause no problems.
But occasionally changes to the nipple can be a warning sign.
A newly inverted nipple is not necessarily a sign of breast cancer but it is always best to go straight to your GP or a breast specialist if you are concerned.
Patients seeking nipple correction surgery or who are keen to get rid of inverted nipples often say their nipples are embarrassing or uncomfortable.
New mums can also find it very difficult and painful to breastfeed if they have inverted nipples.
There are three grades of severity of nipple inversion. In the most severe cases, the milk duct is tighter and shorter, pulling the nipple inward.
There are a variety of techniques available to fix inverted nipples and the procedure usually takes place under local anaesthetic.
The small scar is placed at the base of the nipple and is well hidden. It is a quick and minimal surgery, which requires very little downtime and gets excellent results.
